Mapping storage as it is
Build the room to match what you have:
- Grid racks, shelves, bins and wine fridges
- Rows, columns and depth per rack, so a bottle behind another is still findable
- Several rooms, for a cellar and a kitchen shelf and the garage
Tap a rack to see everything on it. Scan a new bottle and drop it into a slot. Open one and remove it with a tap.
Finding one bottle
Search by name, region or vintage. Cellar tells you the room, the rack and the position, down to the row and column.
That is the difference between a list and a map. A list tells you the bottle exists. A map tells you it is on the main wall, second row, fourth column.
No more assuming it is in the garage somewhere.
When it is worth the setup
Under twenty bottles on one shelf, mapping storage is more work than it saves. The list is enough.
Past a hundred, across more than one rack, the map is the part you use most. That is also the point where a written system usually stops being updated, because the cost of keeping it true has grown past the value of the truth.
Storage conditions matter more than layout for how the wine actually turns out. Steady temperature and darkness do most of the work, and how a wine cellar is meant to be kept covers the basics.
Setting the room up
Adding a rack takes its type and its dimensions: rows, columns, and how deep it is. You do that once per rack.
Bottles go into slots either as you scan them or by moving ones you already have. If a rack turns out to be the wrong size, change it and the bottles stay where they were.
Start with one room and the bottles you actually reach for. The far corners can stay unmapped until it matters.
Scan the next bottle you pick up. The collection builds from there.
